Camera Shy? Not our Fellows! (May 17, 2016)

We have been putting our Fellows through their paces with a day of media training. Thanks to Melanie Doel and John Curzon, who between them have a wealth of broadcast experience with both the BBC and ITV, our May mastercalss was full of practical opportunities to develop the skills that every researcher needs in order to communicate their work to the public.

We wanted Fellows to come away from the session with skills and experiences to:

  • Be more comfortable, confident and in control when dealing with the press
  • Understand how the media works so they can target their key audience
  • Understand the types of interviews they may be asked to take part in
  • Be able to translate their academic work into real life human interest stories and
  • Be confident about taking part in print and broadcast interviews

After an opportunity for the group to talk about how they perceived the media, everyone had time to think about their own research and what they would want to get across in an interview. The rest of the day was spent doing radio and on-camera interviews with time for everyone to de-brief and think about what they might do differently next time around!
